trained video game designers who get paid thousands of dollars for making video game: some things are way too difficult to create with this engine, you have to understand that we are very limited in our possibilities for this game
modders with a pirated version of photoshop who work full jobs outside the video game industry: hey guys I made 100 hairstyles and re-textures of 750 outfits during my lunch time. Also this female character now has proper armor and can be romanced by a female protag. I was kinda busy last night but here are 20 new complexions you can download for free
also modders: hey guys! i created an unofficial bug patch that fixed 185930 places where the game could/does crash, cuts loading time in half and restores broken dialogue and new choices to allow better avenues of conversation! please just endorse and give me feedback :)
ffs people, with AAA games the game designers themselves don’t have a lot of control over the end product. these people work hundreds of hours putting together these bloated games in two or less years. they have to get a game up and running within that amount of time, and are pressured to do it in less.
game designers are paid to enact a vision in the AAA industry. a lot of the time game designers want something cool for their game, but have to fight the business side to do it and often lose. because who is paying who here again?
for example, remember when the last of us came out? naughty dog wanted ellie on the cover and their publisher refused. they had to keep fighting just to get ellie on that cover even though she shares so much significance to the plot. but the publisher kept citing sexist rhetoric to keep walling off the possibility.
i notice op is into mass effect. when mass effect 3 came out, essential lore sliced and diced into dlc, do you think that was the choice of a game designer? to portion out their games to those who can afford it? ea, the publisher, is responsible for this.
publishers are responsible for a lot of the shit you hate in games.
publishers are what force game developers to push broken, incomplete games. and you know why publishers get away with this? because gamers pay for early access, for beta, for pre-orders and the little statues that come with them.
when you pre-order a game or pay for early-access from a AAA game, you’re paying to beta test.
bethesda made its modding community essential to its releases. the modding community has done a service to people who enjoy games. and you know what? that’s incredibly unfair to expect hobbyists to fix games that shouldn’t have been broken in the first place for free.
but publishers don’t give a shit what state the game is in so long as that game turns a profit. so before you dunk on game devs again, can you please learn what the fuck you’re even talking about first?
and i hate this implication that game designers deserve to be paid less when game devs are unionized, often just on contract, and are horribly abused in the workplace by their employers. look up what happened with telltale and midboss.
